A rare 17th century Charles II English carved oak coffer, circa 1660–1680. Constructed in solid oak with the deep, near-black patina that only genuine age can produce, this substantial three-panel chest features outstanding carved decoration throughout — diamond lozenge panels with central rosettes, a beautifully executed central roundel with scrolling foliage, nulling frieze along the top rail and scroll-carved corner stiles.

Original wrought iron hinges and pegged mortise and tenon construction throughout. The carving remains crisp and well defined, the patina rich and authentic.

Originally used as a household storage chest for linens and bedding, today this versatile piece works equally well as a coffee table, hall bench or decorative storage chest.

Condition:

Very good antique condition with only minor signs of age and use. Structurally solid. The piece shows evidence of historic woodworm, now long inactive, which is entirely consistent with and expected in furniture of this age.
